GARHWALI DISH- ALOO-TAMATAR KA JHOL/Potatoes & tomatoes in spicy gravy


  • Potatoes – 5 (boiled & mashed)
  • Tomatoes – 3 (chopped)
  • Green chilies – 4-5 (chopped)
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Jakhya seeds – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  • Dry mango powder – 1 tsp
  • Degi mirch powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala – 2pinches
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard oil – 2 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – required an amount.


  • Put a wok on moderate flame.
  • Add oil & let it heat properly.
  • Add jakhya seeds,saute for few seconds.

  • Now add crushed ginger-green chillies paste.

  • Saute till raw aroma goes.

  • Now add chopped tomatoes & salt.Saute tomatoes till they become soft & mushy.
  • Add all spices except garam masala powder.

  • Now add mashed potatoes( potatoes should not be finely mashed). Mix well.
  • Saute this mixture in low flame for 2 minutes.

  • Now add enough water to make gravy. Here i am using 5 medium-sized cups of water.Gravy should not be thin in texture.

  • Bring first boil in high flame.
  • Lower the flame & let it stew for 10 minutes. Keep stirring in between.
  • Add garam masala powder & chopped coriander leaves.Cover wok with lid and cook for 2 minutes in low flame.

  • Dish is ready.Have it with steamed rice or puris or plain paranthas.
