MASALA KHICHDI

Ingredients

  • Broken Rice – 1 bowl
  • Urad dal/Split black gram lentil – 1/3rd of bowl
  • Vegetables – (1 potato,1 capsicum,1 carrot,1 onion,1 tomato,some peas)
  • Garlic cloves – 5-6 (chopped)
  • Green chillies – 3 (chopped)
  • Cilantro – chopped ( about 2tbsp)
  • Bay leaf – 2
  • Cloves -2
  • Dalchini/ Cinnamon – 1 small stick
  • Asafoetida – 2 pinch
  • Cumin seeds – 1tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/3 tsp
  • Black pepper powder – 1/3 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Cooking oil – 2 tbsp
  • Ghee – 1tsp

Procedure

  • Wash rice & dal properly.Soak in water for atleast 10 minutes.

  • Chop all the vegetables.You can use any vegetable of your choice.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker.
  • Add bay leaf,cloves,cinnamon, asafoetida & cumin seeds.Saute till spices become fragrant.

  • Add chopped garlic & green chillies.Saute till garlic’s raw aroma goes.

  • Add chopped onions & saute till onions turn light brown in colour.

  • Add all chopped veggies except tomato.Saute in medium flame for 3-4 minutes.

  • Add chopped tomato & cilantro.Add turmeric powder,black pepper powder,red chilli powder.Mix well.

  • Saute for 2 minutes in medium flame.
  • Add soaked-drained rice-lentil.Mix well.Saute for 3-4 minutes in medium flame.

  • Add sufficient water & salt.
  • Add 1 tsp of ghee & 1/2tsp of garam masala.Mix well.

  • Close the pressure cooker.Bring first whistle in high flame.
  • After first whistle,lower the flame to sim and cook for 7-8 minutes.
  • Masala khichdi is ready.Have it with butter or ghee.
